Contest Information
Speech Contests start at the club level and work their way through Area, Division, District, and Regional levels.
Only one, the International Speech contest, goes as far as World level.
The different types of contests are (two are chose each Fall and Spring):
Tall Tales - 3 to 5 minutes. Speeches should be exaggerated or outlandish, using irony, humor and/or surprise twists. The speaker may stretch the truth to tell an entertaining story.
Table Topics - 1 to 2 minutes. Contestants are brought out of the room and brought back in one by one, to speak on the same topic.
Evaluation - 2 to 3 minutes. Contestants listen to and evaluate the same speech and are allowed 5 minutes to prepare their speeches and make notes.
They are then taken out of the room and brought back in one by one to deliver their evaluation speech. Contestants are given their notes back prior to giving the evaluation.
Humorous - 5 to 7 minutes. Must be an original speech.
International - 5 to 7 minutes. Must be an original speech with a meaningful and clear purpose. The speech can be on any topic; serious or with humor; persuasive or entertaining.
To compete for this, you must have joined before the previous July 1st and you must have delivered at least 6 manual speeches towards your Competent Communicator.
Except as noted for the International Speech, any member in good standing, except District and International officers, may compete in any contest.
Contestants have 30 seconds leeway on either side of the times listed. However, Table Topic speeches must be a minimum of one minute, no less. Contestant who goes over or under the allotted time will be eliminated from the contest.
